Shining Bright for Philly’s Youth: Lessons from Be the Sun, Not the Salt
At Friends of the Children - Philadelphia, our team is always looking for ways to nurture positivity and strength in our youth, caregivers, and each other.
A few months ago, our staff began reading Be the Sun, Not the Salt, written by psychologist and Friends of the Children - Detroit board member Dr. Harry Cohen. Each chapter offers meaningful, relatable stories that inspire us to “be the sun,” bringing warmth and encouragement into every interaction rather than “the salt,” which can drain energy and dim others’ light.
We recently had the special opportunity to meet Dr. Cohen in person. Together, we reflected on the lessons that resonated most, from choosing optimism in challenging moments to celebrating small victories and remembering that every word and action has the power to lift someone up.
It was a wonderful conversation, full of insight and connection. We shared our biggest takeaways and how we’re applying what we’ve learned in our work each day. As our Friends continue serving youth and caregivers across Philadelphia, we’re carrying forward the spirit of Be the Sun, Not the Salt, spreading kindness and helping every child see their own brilliance reflected back at them.
We’re grateful for Dr. Cohen’s time, insight, and warmth, and we look forward to many more opportunities to connect with him as we continue centering our work on positivity and shining our light.
