March 31, 2025 Celebrating National Reading Month At Friends of the Children - Philadelphia, we believe that reading is more than just a skill—it’s a doorway to confidence, curiosity, and lifelong learning. Throughout March, we focused on fostering a love of books by creating meaningful reading experiences for our youth. From receiving their first library cards to reading stories that reflect their own experiences, every moment we shared reinforced the power of literacy. A First Library Card, A World of Possibilities One of the most exciting milestones this month was when a youth in our program received their very first library card. With their mentor by their side, they explored the shelves, carefully picked out a book, and proudly checked it out. Jumping into Stories That Inspire Another highlight of the month was a shared reading of Jump! Tanya and our youth gathered at the clubhouse to read the book together—and naturally, they had to put the title to the test. Laughter and energy filled the room as they took turns leaping into the air. Even our Program Director, Naimah, got in on the action! Creating Spaces That Invite Reading We know that environment plays a big role in developing a love of reading. Lucas, Donte, and Jared helped their mentor, Kevin, set up a special reading corner in their local library. Together, they picked out books, explored colorful illustrations, and took turns reading words they recognized, getting a little help when needed. A Commitment to Literacy Beyond March National Reading Month may last for 31 days, but our dedication to literacy lasts year-round. Whether it’s celebrating a child’s first library visit, introducing them to books that reflect their identity, or creating consistent reading routines with mentors, we are committed to ensuring that every young person we serve feels empowered to explore the world through stories. By fostering a love of reading today, we are helping to shape the thinkers, leaders, and dreamers of tomorrow. As we turn the page on this month, we look forward to many more stories, discoveries, and reading adventures ahead.
